Book Review - The Fellowship of the Rings - submitted by Beregond5The FOTR is called thus because it refers to the group that is formed to complete a quest to destroy the mighty One Ring, forged by the Dark Lord Sauron; it is also the book that sets things for LOTR trilogy. The action is set about 60 years after the incidents described in the Hobbit (one of the first writings of JRR Tolkien), but this should not intimidate the reader, since there is a quite lengthy prologue which introduces Hobbits, their way of life, and other key elements (like the finding of the Ring of Power). It is also the book with the most elaborate detail, as it attempts to familiarise the reader about names, places, events and to which side each of the main characters is placed when it comes to the matter of the fate of the One Ring. The book is separated into two parts. The first part is more light-hearted (with the exception of one or two chapters) and it is more Hobbit ? centred (that is, it focuses more in the adventures of the Hobbits on the road they take) and there are far more magical elements, which makes it possible that Tolkien intended to make LOTR in the same style as the Hobbit. However, from the second part onwards the plot gets much darker, while the pace quickens. It is mostly centred on the adventures of the Fellowship, which is formed at the first chapters of part 2, and looks at them all as one group as they face the same adventures, grieve over the same misfortunes, and meet their allies. The story ends with a cliff-hanger, only to continue in the next two books. Go back to the book list. Go back to the Home Page. | ||
